The Steam Deck is changing the way Kurt Indovina thinks about console gaming.

It's my go-to platform for gaming these days, especially now that I have Windows sideloaded for gamepass games. It really is a sweet little system.

Steam Deck's biggest impact will be that it erodes Microsoft's dominance in the PC gaming space.

Every game that works on the Steam Deck via Proton is also a game that suddenly will run great on a Linux desktop, no longer needs Windows

Not a fan of Steam, though I enjoyed Portal and Half-Life. But it's good that others are taking the portable space seriously like Nintendo.

Maybe the Steam Deck will encourage Nintendo to try harder with the successor to the Switch.

Nice video. Did y'all hear that? He called it a competitor to the Nintendo Switch.

Thank you.

@Sam3231: as a DIRECT competitor, no. Nintendo's success comes from its first party games that aren't available anywhere else. If Steam Deck sells 50 million a year, Nintendo will sell tons because it does it's own thing.

Yes, as a deck owner, I have to say it's super flexible. I love playing gamepass on deck, then moving over to my TV and continuing on my Xbox.

The funny thing is there's no way in hell Sony would even think of releasing their games on pc, if it wasn't for Xbox making all their games multiplat day1 and day1 gamepass, for the last 5 years and gaining massive pc marketshare. Heck, I bet one thing motivating steam to release the deck was also gamepass and the threat they felt from the Microsoft gaming scene. One thing is for sure, gamers need to thank MS.

@blaznwiipspman1: Gamers need to thank MS for taking Xbox 3rd party? 🤣🤣🤣 Xbox went the Sega route, that's all. Sony is strategically placing old games on multiplatform status to boost hardware and software sales. Any true gamer knows these facts.

@reznik00: gamers should be thanking MS on their hands and knees, this is a fact, let it sink in. Sony is behind the times, and now going around begging regulators to stop the big bad Microsoft, because poor Sony can't compete anymore. I heard Jim Ryan is still in Europe begging regulators as hard as he can to stop Microsoft.

@blaznwiipspman1: At the same time, you might not see MS releasing their games day and date on PC, or see a service like Game Pass or xCloud, if it wasn't for Xbox lagging behind in the console market. You wouldn't see Xbox allowing F2P games to play online without Gold if others didn't do it first. Every gamer could also thank Nintendo and Sony.

The truth is we're lucky to have a market with all of the options we do have now, because each competitor is trying to find their own way in a market that is evolving, with mobile, VR, indies, casual gamers, and core gamers. We're lucky to have new entrants like Steam Deck.

It's a good time to be a gamer and having all of these options.

@girlusocrazy: you are wrong my friend. We should all be thanking MS. Nobody would make a Netflix like gaming subscription service just because of being slightly behind. They had a vision, and wanted to push the industry forward.

Let this sink in, MS still sold 50 million Xbox one, and it was a terrible console gen for them, a big back slide from Xbox 360. People will buy Xbox regardless, team America f yeah! So was there a need at that point to make a whole new subscription service and push it so hard?? No there wasn't.

There was no need for them to invest $80 billion, possibly $100 billion just to compete with Sony. Like I said, we should all be thanking MS on hands and knees.

@blaznwiipspman1: the vision was to take Xbox 3rd party because MS was going to sell the unprofitable brand, which it currently still is. Stop being delusional, this is like standing by Sega during their failed CD/32X/Saturn phase.

@reznik00: My friend, no offense but it looks like you are the delusional one. MS are our gaming saviors.

Lol at selling the brand. Because investing $100 billion into the gamepass service is a sure sign that they're going to sell it for scraps.

I love that it's the most open and flexible gaming device on the market, and it has strong hardware and software support, and strong third party support. It is showing that the console-ization of PC gaming is possible, and that there is a demographic that wants this to happen. And it doesn't take anything away from traditional PC gamers.

Open operating system, does not lock the user in to a particular OS or store, allows the user to load their own OS and apps and configure the device the way they want. Excellent support by Valve that are quick and consistent to add and refine features and game compatibility. Third parties are eager to get their games Deck Verified on day one. Having an officially supported hardware spec for developers to target means that consistent performance and compatibility can be achieved like on a console.

The one thing that can be improved is how Steam manages family game sharing. Steam should allow families to each play a different game on their devices from the same digital library at the same time. But currently, as per the Steam FAQ, this is not possible:

"Can two users share a library and both play at the same time?

No, a shared library may only be accessed by one user at a time."

So for a family that is typically about 4-5 people you will not be able to have a single library of digital games and play at the same time. Instead you have to manage who buys what and who can play what at any given time.

This has yet to be addressed by any digital storefront, aside from DRM-free GoG purchases. Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft also need to address this on consoles. As more digital purchases are made, and more people become gamers each with their own devices, it is important to address the limitations of digital purchases in a family setting.

@girlusocrazy: good point! One of the disappointing things about Xbox game pass is that I can’t play a multiplayer game with my girlfriend with pc/console or console/cloud.

@faithxvoid: are you sure about that? Xbox allows you to share games, gamepass sub, Xbox live gold with one other person. I've researched it before and even done it with my brother. I haven't played the same game together at the same time though, but just googling it up, I find people are doing it.

@blaznwiipspman1: If you do this, then that means you are making their console your "home" console.

That means on your console, only your profile will be able to play games and nobody else.

You also need to trust them with your account. There is also a limit of how many times per year you can change your "home" console, so you can't pick different people on a whim.

You said it, the limit here is 2 people, and there are those restrictions mentioned above. That's far from a family, and it's very inflexible.

Progress needs to be made here.

To contrast this, I have a shelf of physical games, and 4 consoles that can play them. Anyone can come and take a game from that shelf and play them on any of the consoles on their profile. 4 (or more) people can play different games at the same time with no hassles.

The same should be possible with a digital library.

@girlusocrazy: you are right, it's not flexible, but it's not that bad. It might not be right for everyone, but it's not bad for a majority of people. I think you can use other accounts on the same Xbox as long as the main one with gamepass is signed in.

About the number of changes you can do, you can switch 5 times per year, which is decent and more than enough for most people. How many times would you want to switch anyways?
