The Way of Water needed under two weeks to become among the most successful films in the history of the world.

Avatar: The Way of Water is doing huge numbers at the box office. The Walt Disney Company announced that the sequel to the highest-grossing movie of all time brought in more than $1 billion worldwide after its first 14 days in theaters.

Comparing to video games, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II reached $1 billion in retail sales after 10 days, faster than any previous Call of Duty game. Comparisons between film and video games, however, are unfair and incomplete, as there any many additional factors and nuances to consider.

The Way of Water became the fastest to reach $1 billion at the global box office since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. It's also the sixth movie in history to surpass $1 billion in its first two weeks, and the fourth Disney movie to reach this mark.

Additionally, The Way of Water is now 2022's biggest international release, surpassing Top Gun: Maverick for the crown. The two Avatar films have now grossed $4 billion+ together.

Top Gun: Maverick remains 2022's top movie overall worldwide, with $1.48 billion compared to $1.1 billion for The Way of Water. The bulk of The Way of Water's box office results came from international markets ($762.8 million) compared to domestic results ($338 million).

The Way of Water ranks No. 33 on the all-time list of biggest movies ever by total global box office results. It will continue to climb the charts before its theatrical run comes to end. Like the 2009 original Avatar (which is the highest-grossing movie of all time with $2.92 billion), The Way of Water is expected to have a long and successful run in theaters thanks to its excellent audience scores.

The actual quote from Cameron was "$2 billion to break even in terms of investment". The actual production budget is said to be in the $250 million range. And investment is not a budget.

I will wait for it to come to Blu-Ray or DVD. I am not going to trash it, the shots were beautiful.

Millions of people eat McDonalds. Doesn't mean it isn't crap (and profoundly unhealthy).

To all those who kept saying no one was interested in this movie, let this be a lesson. The internet is full of people with a lot of time and opinions, but very little real information.

@judaspete: A lot of the internet has a real issue differentiating between, "I'm not interested." and, "Nobody is interested.".

@judaspete: The internet is stupid....

They said top gun and the marvel movies were doa this year... hardly.

China is not going to the movies... pandemic and all, or else these numbers would be higher.

They may still lose money on this movie, but all are hoping the next two will pay for it all.

@Barighm: I did not know this. Movies make a lot more in syndication now then ever, even more then VCR and DVD era. With each syndication license, streaming sites now pay much more then your TBS, or USA. Even stinkers will do well in this era as compared to big hit movies as Nielsen numbers or sales do matter as much.

Movie studios or their investors also keep a lot more money for these movies now then ever. Where once actors, directors, editors and more used to get decent royalties through their unions ... (where a movie like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly) ... would pay a royalty with each new syn. lic.. Now movies deals edit out the royalties that actors, or creators would get. So a successful cult hit movie like say, Princess Bride, would rake in money for the producers or investors -- year after year, but they would no longer have to give any to the creatives.

Now creative groups (actors/agents/assistants) (directors, dir assistants, etc) (editors, etc) are getting paid outright and or offered a % of the box office take. Stars and directors that do press junkets or promos, is included or offered a good bit more. Some actors, comedians, social media elites, etc make a lot of money just doing promos, podcasts, etc. Which is paid out through over budgeted promotions. It is the long term game that pays the most.

Oh and like you said above, ..... no one is getting licensing of merchandise except for the studios/investors. The days of George Lucas who got the merchandising rights is... long gone. It all goes back to the initial investors.

Tax breaks given to these studios and corporations is insane now as compared to 20yrs ago, 30, or even in the 80s! There is a reason there is so many new movies, and shows, and reality junk... it has become much harder to fail. Who is paying their taxes.... we are, the middle class taxpayers are eating these taxes in so many ways.

It will be years and years before anyone knows just how well these huge blockbusters do. Some movies just make gobs of money immediately and then quickly forgotten, some do poorly but just pick up steam later on and stay relevant forever. As for AVATAR... it will be okay, I am not worried about billionaires and their pet projects.... they will be just fine.
