Matthew Lillard (Scream, Twin Peaks) and Josh Hutcherson (Hunger Games, The Disaster Artist) have stepped into undisclosed roles in Blumhouse Production's Five Nights at Freddy's film adaptation. Deadline was first to report.

The film is based on the game series created by Scott Cawthon. It follows the story of a night security guard at a pizza shop called Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Naturally, things go badly. Blumhouse is the production company behind many popular horror films including Get Out, Insidious, and Halloween. Animatronics for the adaptation will be made by the iconic Oscar-winning production company Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

"Stepping into the rich, terrifying world of Freddy's alongside Scott Cawthon, Blumhouse, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop is beyond thrilling," director Emma Tammi said. "I cannot wait for audiences to immerse themselves in the wild and wonderful playground we are creating."

The film is expected to start production in early 2023. In 2021, previous director Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter) dropped out of the project after Hawthorn vetoed Columbus' version of the script. Prior to that, the FNAF film had been in development for a very long time, and part of the struggle to get it off the ground was getting the script right.

Movies adapting video games have increasingly become a safer bet in Hollywood. Last week, a feature film adaptation of Death Stranding from Kojima Productions and Barbarian's Hammerstone Studios became the latest in a year filled with similar announced projects. The The Last of Us TV show for HBO, The Super Mario Bros. movie, and Peacock's Twisted Metal are among many similar projects slated for release in 2023.
