New On HBO Max In January 2023: The Last Of Us, Velma

HBO Max's line-up is growing during the month of January, including more movies, TV shows, and originals. Here's what you can start streaming next month.

December is already more than half gone, and January is not far away. A new month ahead also means a whole new slate of shows and movies to watch on HBO Max. Some of that content will be available on January 1, while other shows and movies will be available a little later next month. The big marquee content for January on HBO is undoubtedly The Last of Us, coming to the platform on January 15. It's been a long, long road for the series adapting the popular and grim 2013 zombie video game. Rather than rehash the game, the story as presented there, and the other adaptations that were attempted along the way, here's the official synopsis: "This series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival."

For something similar--but way less scary and also pretty different--the series premiere of Velma hits HBO Max on January 12. The adult animated series stars Mindy Kaling in a Scooby-Doo series that tells the origin story of a reimagined Velma. First announced back in February this year, a synopsis says the show will be "an original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America's most beloved mystery solvers." Reportedly, the show will be gorier from the original long-running Scooby-Doo everyone remembers--and will likely, per the "adult" descriptor here, diverge in other ways as well.

Below is a list of all the content coming to HBO Max in January.
